History & Culture

While better known for attracting Europe's jet set, Marbella has an interesting and varied history. Originally named Salt City by the Romans who conquered it in 1600BC, the town proceeded to change hands a number of times. In 6th Century the Arabs conquered the city and renamed it Marbil-la. They built a large defensive fortress in the town that you can still visit today.

In 1485, Marbella was reclaimed by the Spanish who destroyed much of the Arab architecture and town squares to replace them and eradicate its history. It has remained in Spanish hands ever since, warding of attacks by pirates.

Until the 1940s, Marbella remained a small industrial town. Then Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe landed in Marbella and was so enchanted with the town that he brought land to build touristic complexes. He opened the Marbella Club Hotel in the 1950s and invited the worlds royalty to discover this beautiful coastline. And, as they say, the rest is history.

Wildlife & Nature

There are a number of flora and fauna to discover in Marbella and its surrounds and plenty of outdoor pursuits for nature lovers. Around Marbella you will find golden eagles, martens and foxes, badgers, dear, wild goats as well as local plants.

There is an excellent safari park just a small drive away which has bat caves, monkeys, camels and a petting zoo amongst a range of other attractions.
