Alderney BBQ

Barbeque Go Zone. Alderney’s Beaches 'More Than Cut the Mustard'!

Alderney, the Channel Island, is a beautiful slice of uncrowded ‘franglais’ with a stunning array of beach and fort barbeque venues. With only 1,500 residents and less than 2,000 visitors per annum, your solus position is rarely under threat. The backdrops are breathtaking and each entirely unique.  With a stunning choice of five white sand beaches, eight Victorian coastal forts and a further ten stone and shingle coves, barbeque aficionados are always guaranteed that extra sparkle as the sausages sizzle.

In the old days, it was wrecks that dotted the coastline, now it is mainly wildlife, firelighters and vino. In that order. Disappointed?  So, where can the   surf or cliffs add garnish to your tasty barbeque bite?

Saye Bay and Bibette Head

Saye Bay was listed as being one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the UK. Snuggled into the island, and guarded by two Victorian forts, its wide expanse of sand and dunes makes the perfect setting as the gentle waves lap at the water’s edge. The adventurous might carry their barbeque kit on to Bibette Head where an old German bunker, complete with an unintentional sun terrace, provides the most spectacular of sundowner venues with views over Braye Harbour and the island of Burhou.

Arch Bay

Noted for its Arch, this small little bay has long been a “fry up” favourite!  Overlooked by the pretty fort of Chateau  de L’etoc, Arch Bay looks out over the stunning horizon of Fort Corblets, the Lighthouse and beyond. This is probably the most popular kids barbeque hangout on the island. It is small, carefree and ideal for beach cricket or  a game of rounders. Deliciously Swallows and Amazons! Grandparents can sip their gin and tonics and holler from the grassy plateau, whilst parents turn up the heat above the seaweed line.  Arch Bay is also a great venue for a long and languid evening swim.

Corblets and Fort Corblets

This is the surf dude beach. Yes, rollers come hand in hand with the body beautiful. It’s a place for the teenagers and early twenties to take their beach buggies, hang out with a burger and share a few beers with half tuned guitars. For the cooler, unattached crowd, not a place to be seen with your parents!

The Mannez and Houmet Herbe

With roaring rip tides and the Alderney Race bubbling in contraflow in front of you, there is never a dull moment on this headland. There are many little cove and cliff path locations, almost cinematic in their beauty, to whip up the appetite. Views are across to France, which seems almost touchable after a few glasses of vino. The grasslands behind the old Victorian firing range make for the 'mother' venue of all parties.  Even the sea comes up to your make shift bar, waiting to be served.

Longis Bay and Raz

Protected by a massive mile long wall and overlooked by the giddy heights of a tudor castle, Longis is an oasis of beach calm. It has a huge tide, so the water can be as far as half a kilometre away. The whole scene is one of serenity and is well protected from the wind. It’s left shore is protected by the causeway leading out to Fort Raz which is cut off at high tide. Bring your tide tables as well as food tables, or your barbeque could end up being an all night affair.

Braye Beach Dunes

Closer to civilization, so great when you need to replenish supplies from the local pubs, the Braye Dunes still offers little barbeque spots that are a bit of a clamber. Great for Owl and the Pussy cat guitar parties. The location is known for some more upmarket gastro-beach creations and has been known to encourage the odd fling or two. The atmosphere of undulating dune seduction leads to caution being thrown to the winds, waves and long grasses!!

Fort Clonque and the Zig-Zags

The sunset in this area of remotest Alderney is 'barbeque sublime'. Fort Clonque is a rentable causeway fort owned by the Landmark trust. The bay is home to an eco-system that still reflects it's pre-historic origins, it is that untouched. The plethora of islands, the ebb and flow cross-currents of the swirling Alderney Swinge and the stunning highs and lows of the vertical heather clad cliffs makes Wuthering Heights look like Milton Keynes in comparison. Tales of shipwrecks and folklore abound as you sip and savour, looking out to a panorama where an early Prince Henry, the heir to the throne of England, came to grief on The Casquets rocks. Your uninvited barbeque guest list might include a puffin, a coastal bunny or a foodie gannet on a ‘recce’ from the largest gannet colonies making themselves home-proud in the next door cove. The wild flowers and cliff path heather make for an inspired zig-zag swagger as you make your way home for a night cap in one of the many pubs in the pretty cobbled island capital town of St Annes, smokey jumpers et al… nobody cares!!

Please note: Alderney is quite rightly very protective of its maritime and coastal environment.  There are strict rules and regulations about beach barbeques, fires, litter and glass management. All beach venues require a barbeque permit from the States of Alderney – make sure to check it out before you light the fire.
